We first started raising rabbits in 2013 I believe. We started with rabbits and cages that someone was selling as a package deal. The cages weren't the best and most needed some work. The rabbits were Lionhead, a couple New Zealand, and the rest were mutts. I sold the rabbits in 2015, but then in 2019 I got the itch again and started with better stock. The problem then was we had them in our backyard and we have an insane amount of mosquitoes. Mosquitoes were causing problems with our rabbits, we had weather to deal with and a litter of Flemish went through an illness. Covid hit and shut down rabbit shows and I was working at the time. I didn't have the time, energy, or the set-up that I wanted so I sold out for a second time.
So now we moved the rabbitry back to my parent's farm and the rabbits are in the barn again. We are starting small and only have Rex right now. We have to buy carriers, more cages, build hutches for the Flemish Giants, and find the very best stock we can get our hands on. My plan is to have Rex, a couple pairs of Flemish Giants, a few New Zealand does to cross with Flemish for meat, and maybe Giant Chinchilla or another breed. I really do enjoy raising rabbits and missed having them. Hopefully we get to a few shows next year.
I am doing this blog to share our experiences and what we've learned to maybe help others who are just starting with rabbits. We enjoy teaching others and welcome any questions.
