It has been a minute since I've made a blog post. Our rabbit barn has undergone some improvements since the last time. We've added 4 stacker units that I both love and hate. I love that it saves some space but I hate dumping the litter pans.
We took the cattle panels off the front of the barn and put up a very nice wall. I now have a larger gate that makes wheeling the cart in so much easier.
We have started showing our Rex more. In November 2024 we attended the Arkansas Delta Rabbit Breeder's show in Lonoke. It was a VERY small show with only 7 Rex total, 5 of them being Rocky Hill rabbits. Troubador took Best of Breed and earned two Legs.
March 14 and 15 2025 we attended the much larger Northwest Arkansas Rabbit Club's show in Bentonville. Over 90 Rex were shown! It was a much different experience and I was thrilled when Huckleberry, our broken blue buck took 1st in the broken sr buck class. We showed Troubador, Huckleberry, Tessie, and our junior Opal buck, Jesse James. They all either won or placed second for all 4 shows that weekend. Troubador is now eligible to get his Grand Champion title and Huckleberry only needs one more Leg. To see where we started a few years ago and the quality of rabbits we have now is just amazing. I am so very proud of our rabbits.
We now have more chickens and the hens have chosen the feed room and the barn as their spot to lay their eggs. We have been collecting nearly a dozen every day.
We raised a young hog and had him processed last fall and we have a boar that needs a mate. We want to raise as much of our own food as possible. We recently got our garden planted and baby garden plants always makes me happy.
There is a show in Carthage, MO next month and I am contemplating taking a few of the bucks. Troubador and Huckleberry need to be registered so they can get their Grand Champion title. Jesse won't be able to be registered because he's missing some weights in his pedigree, on his mom's side. This is why making sure we add weights, variety, date of birth, etc to pedigrees is so important!
I have a couple young litters now and expecting litters from a white New Zealand doe and Tessie, and that will probably wrap up spring breeding. It isn't even May yet and we've already hit 80 degrees. I will not breed through the summer heat. My does are excellent mamas and I won't add any more stress to them than I have to. They get to rest during the summer and I will plan to breed in September. In the fall I will have several new does ready to breed.
